London: Chelsea in talks to sign Brighton forward Danny Welbeck
Chelsea are currently in discussions to sign Brighton striker Danny Welbeck. The 35-year-old forward is reportedly keen on a move to Stamford Bridge, and there is optimism from Chelsea’s side that a deal can be finalised. This potential transfer signals a strategic shift for Chelsea, as the club seeks to add more experienced players to its squad.
Welbeck’s potential arrival aligns with Chelsea’s acknowledged need for experienced players, a sentiment expressed by owner Behdad Eghbali in April. The club has been looking to adjust its model of primarily signing young players. Welbeck had a notable season last term, scoring 13 league goals in 37 games for Brighton, which was his career-high return. Since joining Brighton from Watford in 2020, he has scored 51 goals in 201 matches.
Strategic Shift at Chelsea
The pursuit of Welbeck is seen as a clear indication of a change in Chelsea’s transfer strategy this summer. This follows earlier attempts to sign 33-year-old midfielder Granit Xhaka from Sunderland, although the Black Cats declined to sell the Switzerland captain. While Chelsea recently signed Morgan Rogers, 23, for a club-record £117m, who fits the younger player policy, he also brings significant Premier League experience.
Chelsea are also reportedly close to completing a £52m move for Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix, 26, further demonstrating their intent to acquire Premier League-ready talent. Welbeck’s addition would provide cover for Joao Pedro, who is considered the club’s first-choice option among forwards. However, this move could impact the futures of several other Chelsea forwards.
Nicolas Jackson, who recently returned from a loan spell at Bayern Munich, was expected to remain at Stamford Bridge but is reportedly open to leaving due to interest from Aston Villa. Liam Delap, who joined Chelsea from Ipswich for £30m just a year ago, was keen to establish himself under new manager Xabi Alonso but is now increasingly expected to depart. There is also uncertainty surrounding the future of Dutch striker Emmanuel Emegha, despite his recent move to Chelsea from Strasbourg.
The club also has Marc Guiu on its books, who is understood to be available for either a permanent transfer or a loan move, with Chelsea valuing him at approximately £25m. The potential arrival of Welbeck would likely mean that more than one of these forwards will be moving elsewhere.
Welbeck’s Appeal and Impact
Welbeck’s appeal to Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso stems from his qualities as both a player and a leader. His experience is particularly valued, as Chelsea’s four senior strikers currently have an average age of just 23. Combined, these younger strikers have made 269 Premier League appearances and scored 74 goals. In contrast, Welbeck alone has 400 appearances and 90 goals in the Premier League, highlighting the significant experience he would bring.
The veteran striker has been praised for his leadership, with Fabian Hurzeler, Brighton’s manager, noting his value as both a goalscorer and a leader on and off the pitch after a 2-1 win over Liverpool in March. Welbeck’s ability to keep defenders engaged with off-the-ball runs and his effective link-up play, especially when playing with Joao Pedro, are also seen as valuable assets. He also possesses a strong shot-to-goal conversion rate of 23 per cent among players with 30 or more shots last season.
This move would represent another instance of Chelsea acquiring players from Brighton in recent seasons, following transfers for Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella, Robert Sanchez, and Joao Pedro. Welbeck signed a 12-month contract extension in March, with his current deal running until the end of the 2026-27 season.
Brighton has declined to comment on the ongoing discussions regarding Welbeck’s potential transfer to Chelsea.
Chelsea’s manager, Xabi Alonso, appears to be getting the experienced and strong personalities he desires to address the shortcomings that contributed to the team’s 10th-place finish in the Premier League last season.
Welbeck played in all but one of Brighton’s 38 Premier League games last season.
